split ends are small rips or tears along the hair shaft or ends, leaving the hair dry and brittle. split ends are the result of hair damage, which causes the outer layer or the cuticle to split, exposing and unravelling the inner layer (cortex). they're often caused by excessive heat or chemical treatments, or by rough handling with hair pins and rubber bands. solutions: split ends cannot be repaired, so a trim is the best way to restore a healthy texture to your hair.
